Redwood Resort is located right on Lost Island Lake, just north of Ruthven, Iowa. The lake is a multi-use recreation area, providing camping, picnicking and hiking plus shore and boat access. The lake has a surface area of 1,266 acres, offering plenty of fishing, boating, tubing, and water skiing fun.

Lost Island Prairie Wetland Nature Center

Lost Island Prairie Wetlands Nature CenterThe Lost Island Prairie Wetlands Nature Center, located right on the lake, serves as a site for nature education amid more than 5,000 acres of public lakes, marshes, and upland habitat. The center features a wetland diorama, interpretive hiking trial, and a wildlife observation deck and blind.

The Lost Island Prairie Wetland Nature Center's purpose is to instill in the public an appreciation and basic understanding of the wetlands and offer opportunities to enjoy the beauty of nature in our area.

The Palo Alto County Conservation Board offers educational programs and organized events at the Nature Center and at the lake throughout the year. Check their calendar for a list of upcoming events.


Area wetlandLost Island Lake features 5000 acres of surrounding wetlands and almost 300 species of birds, making it one of the top birding area in the Midwest.

This beautiful lake area, with a county park on one side, and the Department of Natural Resources on the other, is a bird watchers paradise. Area marshes and wetlands, such as the one pictured to the right, offer a wonderful haven to migratory and indigenous birds as well as other wildlife.

Also in the area is the recently opened Trumpeter Trail, a canoe trail through wetlands where visitors can go on a wetland safari. The Trumpeter Canoe Trail provides ten miles of marked water trail connecting three lakes and three marshes.
